Speaking on Citizenship Amendment Bill, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal this time launched a scathing attack on the Congress over the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal ) (IMDT) Act.
It may be noted that the Act was challenged by the then Asom Gana Parishad Lok Sabha MP Sonowal in the courts. In 2005 a three-judge Bench of the Supreme Court of India held that the IMDT Act, 1983 and rules “has created the biggest hurdle and is the main impediment or barrier in the identification and deportation of illegal migrants” and struck down the Act.
“The Congress brought in the IMDT Act without asking the people of Assam. The Act was also not discussed in the floor of the parliament. We all know how the Act was scrapped,” he said.
It may be noted that the All Assam Students’ Union had conferred the ‘Jatiya Nayak’ (national hero) title on Sonowal when the Supreme Court struck down the Act in 2005 as a verdict of the Sarbananda Sonowal vs Union of India Case.
“Had the Congress and Left supported the historic Assam Agitation, 855 courageous men and women wouldn’t had to embrace death untimely,” he added.
