Iconic singer-musician from Assam, Bhupen Hazarika to be awarded with the highest civilian award of India, Bharat Ratna, posthumously. Bhupen Hazarika’s son, Tez Hazarika will be receiving the award.
President Ramnath Kovind will be presenting the award at the Rashtrapati Bhawan today at 6 PM. Government on January 25 made an announcement that former President Pranab Mukherjee, Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader aji Deshmukh (posthumously) and Bhupen Hazarika (posthmously) will be conferred with the Bharat Ratna.
‘Bhupenda’, as he was popularly known, was a poet, music composer, singer, actor, journalist, author and filmmaker, all rolled into one. He took the rich folk heritage of Assam and interpreted it beautifully for the world through his songs.
Reportedly, CM Sarbananda Sonowal, Atul Bora and the state BJP MLAs will be presented at the event. It to be mentioned that from Bhupen Hazarika’s family side, Manisha Hazarika, Dawor Hazarkia and Tej Hazarika will also attend the ceremony.
